Nikon D5, 200-500mm 5.6. To the best of my recollection I was about 25 feet away.

My goodness, how did you get that close? We’re you invisible? I can understand the long lens, but that close? Wow!

Beautiful bird. I was just lucky enough to be there when he showed up. I did have to work my way through some trees and brush to get a clear line of sight and was quite surprised that I didn't spook him. The surrounding brush gave me some measure of camuflage and apparently he was too intent on fishing for breakfast. After I took the shot, his beak went down to the water in the blink of an eye and came up with a fish but alas, I did not capture that. With today's digital technology, I maintain that it's hard to take a "bad" photo. A good long zoom makes it easy to capture wildlife.

Nice shot! Oh believe me, it's not hard at all to take a bad photo. Even with the best digital gear!!

Maybe, but that's when you engage the best digital feature...the delete button and shoot it again.
