Which Olympus Camera?

First let me state that I know next to nothing about Olympus 4/3 cameras, but I have been reading about them having Live Composite, and I am very intrigued. I would like to purchase a used Olympus for this purpose and was hoping to get a recommendation on which model to look for. Anything around 12 to 24 megapixels would be fine. I would be on a tripod so the lens can be a kit lens or whatever. I would like to keep the price <$500 if possible and if not would consider more. Live composite is the only thing for which I would be using it.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I would look for a used E-M1 mkII or mkIII. An E-M5 mkII or greater is another possibility. Any Panasonic or Olympus lens will work on it. None of these need a tripod unless you are doing wide angle astrophotography (or something similar). Then you will need a tripod. One more thing: although the bodies will be weatherproof, it will take a weatherproof Olympus or Panasonic lens for the system to be weatherproof. If no need of weatherproofing, consider an E-M10 body. Just be aware that some of the early 4/3rds bodies of both Olympus and Panasonic were only 16mp. All the newer ones are 20mp or greater.

I love my OM-D M-10 Mark III. Prices NEW are reduced and in your price range because the Mark IV was released a few months ago.

The EM10-MkIi is a great camera for this feature, 12-42mm kit lens … under $500. I gave 2 ….. plus other Olympus camera bodies and Lens. This model is a great jumping off place. Great quality and small size.

I have the EM10 Mk 3 and think it’s a great camera for your introduction to Olympus/OM systems. It’s at a price point, especially if used, that can encourage you to pick up another lens, maybe a 40-150 “plastic fantastic” or maybe a 14-150; either will get you enough range to help determine your next needs. However, as they say ‘if I knew then what I know now’, I would have gone for the weather sealed EM5 Mk 2; now that there is a EM5 mk 3, you could probably pick up a good used one for what you would pay for a new EM10 Mk4. Happy hunting!

In the first place, there is no Olympus camera sporting 24 Mp. "The EM10-MkII is a great camera for this feature." I agree, it is a small body and very capable. The camera has 16 MP that in my experience are good enough for 13x19 enlargements, I seldom go larger.
The Live Composite feature that you are seeking is a great tool not only for daylight photography (using a neutral density filter) but also for night time photography which was the original intention of Olympus.

These cameras can be bought today at reasonable prices below your budget.

You might as take advantage of recent used omdem1mk5 flooding the market due to the OM1 and don’t chance on a lens I recommend picking up the 12-40f2.8 pro lens sharpest zoom lens I ever owned

As others have said, the EM10-mkII is a great camera. It is better than the EM10-mkiii in my opinion And maybe even the mkiv unless you want 4k video. I sold my mkiii and went back to the mkii. This is my small/budget travel camera to compliment my full frame Sony system.

1. Go on Youtube and see what cameras the authors of the videos are using for live composite. Read manuals.

2. I have a Pen F and and EM1 Mk III both are excellent for this purpose. I think the EM1 MKii and MK i cameras have live composite too. Recent EM5 cameras should have this too.

3. I think once that you start using Olympus cameras , they might just become your favorites. I have a Nikon D7200 and I think my Pen F and EM1 Mk III produce a bit better photos. Olympus cameras are super for macro work.

You do need a tripod for Live Composite!

Sorry to distract. What is a live composite? OR, can you point me in the right direction?

I have a EM5 Mk 2 and it is a great walk around camera! For more serious landscapes and low light situations i use my Canon 5D MK2. Seems like I take the Olympus more often. The 14-150 lens on the Olympus is great for most situations. Takes great pictures.

P.S. The "kit lens," 14-40mm has a marvel. Small, pancake. Approx 30 - 80mm equivalent zoom. The Mark III is s 16 MP camera. The Mark IV ups it to 20 MP.

These cameras have excellent image stabilization. Album:

I used it exclusively for my your of Big Bend, pre-pandemic.

I don't know about that feature but I like the Pen F because it looks more like a "real camera" i.e. the camera one would have had 40-50 years ago. Yeah, I know looks don't matter and they are totally subjective but that's my choice.
