To me, it’s buffalo. If you’re a taxonomist, by all means, call them the other word. Otherwise, butt out of redefining historically meaningful words.

Unfortunately, your wife is right though. What we refer to as Buffalo here in the USA are really Bison. Buffalo do not roam in the American West. Buffalo are indigenous to South Asia (water buffalo) and Africa (Cape buffalo). Supposedly, when early explorers from Europe saw the Bison, they mistakenly called them Buffalo, and the name stuck.
Last night I googled the differences between buffalo and bison. It explained that bison have a shoulder hump and beards and buffalo do not. Then, I clicked on a link of pictures of buffalo. It included water buffalo AND our western bison/buffalo!
