Sony RX100

I am starting a new thread in response to one started by SGOMBOZ a couple of days ago, because I don’t like to post my photos without permission on someone else’s thread.
I agree with everyone who complimented the RX 100. Mine is the vi. The only thing I did not see anyone warn about is the need to carry a couple of extra charged batteries. Shooting all day takes a lot of power.

The first photo was taken at a funeral towards the end of graveside service. I had moved to the fringe of the group. My Sony was in my pocket, when I saw the two sons in the moment that the sun came from behind the clouds, while they were looking down into the grave at their father’s coffin. The camera was ready to shoot in five seconds at full telephoto, yet quite unobtrusive. It was a simple matter in Photoshop using layers to produce the second photo.
This image pretty much demonstrates the quality of the lens in good light… to me, more than acceptable.

Very nicely done! I bought the original RX100 years ago and find it's perfect as a pocket camera.

Great images! I have the Sony RX100 VII and love it. Non-camera question for you: How did you add the dark gray / black background on the second image? I know it was PS, but can you "black out" the background in a photo? Trying to get better with PS and any tips would be appreciated!

Open file, make a “new” any size and color ( not too dark… can’t be lightened) and copy the lassoed part of your image you want to put on the new file ( command c) then command v on your new image, command t to move and size it, enter to lock it in place. Lighten or darken background with a mask to vary it.

Nice shots. Yes, battery life is a concern.

Planning on getting one. Thanks for warning about batteries. Only real criticism I’ve heard. Thanks

From what I recall about the RX100 series, each new model came with a higher price, additional features, but they also lost features from the previous model.

An RX100 just sold for $127.50 on eBay. That's not listed on the Sold category yet.

The original one is selling for low prices.

I should add that there have been many who complain about the complicated menu.

Good point on the complicated menus, PHRubin, but once I setup the "My Menu" function, it's been a breeze. I keep the items there that I use most often, and really once you understand how the menus flow, it's not that hard.

I have the Sony line and really like them. You did a great job in Photoshop, makes the photo more dramatic.

I've been looking at this for something more "portable" than my normal two-DSLR setup. Considering the RX100 -- although I don't know which version would be best as the VI and VII are a bit too pricey for me -- and the HX99, which, of course, costs much less. Both have Zeiss lenses. I believe the main difference is the HX is a "crop sensor" and the RX is full-frame?

I had the RX100iii until I dropped it and repair cost was too close to cost of a new one. Otherwise I would still be using it. It was my camera to carry around when I wasn’t taking photographs. Same lens, so for your needs, look at used.
As to the comments on the difficulty of the Sony triangle: yes there is a rather steep learning curve. However, if you consider the exposure triangle, and learn how to alter each point, the menu makes sense.
