Is there any quality difference between the New Nikon 18-300mm lens and the Older Nikon 28-300mm lens ? If not why is the 18-300mm lense cheaper ? I currently have the 28-300mm lens but if the quality is as good I would like the extra wide angle. All comments welcome, would like the expertise of the knowledgable people on UHH.
Aperture is usually a good indicator of physical lens size (diameter). A smaller aperture, such as f/2.8, is associated with larger glass optics than a similar lens length with an aperture of f/4. Larger diameter lenses are more expensive to manufacture.
The BIG difference is the 28-300mm is a full frame lens with full size glass. The 18-300mm is a DX lens with the smaller size glass elements, and $50 more money.
Mt Shooter I assume from your comments that I would be better off keeping the 28-300mm lens. Is that what you would advise ?

Absolutely. The DX 18-55mm VR will give you the same bottom end as the DX 18-300mm for only $100. The 28-300 VR II is a superb lens for the money.
Thanks Mt Shooter, I have an18-55mm lens and also the 18-105 kit lens that came with the camera. I really appreciate your expertise and advice .
If I remember right you have a D7000? Sounds like you are well equipped the way it is.
Thanks again Mt Shooter really appreciate your help.

Its very nice throughout the range. I have posted several photos on here using that lens, both with a D7000 and with a D800E body.

OP does not state his camera type. On a DX camera that 28-300 FX will reach to 43-450mm. It is my favored lens on both the D600 and D60

He said he is considering the 18-300mm lens. Since that is a DX lens then its pretty obvious he has a DX body. That 18-300mm lens yields an equivalent 27-450mm on those DX bodies. Its not rocket science.
