Bracketing means to shoot two or more additional shots of a particular scene at slightly different settings... both over, and under what is determined as the "ideal" exposure.
Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB) is a function most DSLRs have to take three photos with only one click of the shutter, each in different exposures. The result will be one photo a bit too bright, one just right (depending on which part youre looking to expose properly) and one a bit darker.
If you dont have AEB you can adjust your cameras exposure settings in increments of one half or one third stops your settings should be equal (ie: +1 and -1.) This is helpful for tricky lighting conditions that might be slightly over exposed or underexposed. Typically when bracketing, I either use a +1/-1 setting to a +2/-2 setting. For me a tripod is critical because I tend to move. If you have AEB and are hand holding you will need to keep perfectly still so that when you layer or fuse your photos that they will line up correctly. Yes, after loading your shots on your computers you will need to select the 3 of them and layer them on top of each other this making a HDR or high dynamic range photo
some pp programs have HDR and will do the exposure bracketing for you.
Another type of bracketing is focus bracketing; it can be extremely useful in situations such as macro photography, since the large apertures involved severely constrain the depth of field. By combining photographs taken at different focal distances, an in-focus composite image can be created. The time required for this method does not lend itself to high-speed photography or pictures taken unsupported.
Here are a few examples to get us started
feel free to post either your 3 photos and then the final result or just the final result with the setting you used (ie +1/-1)
Remember red is always an option!

Hi, Annette. Huh???? Guess I will come back in the morning to see more examples. lol.
Wishing you a good day.
Hahaha. You are trying to tempt huh? Just wait and see! I am going to bring it!
I usually take pics with the RAW format....havent taken bracketing yet because it eats up so much space on my card..but Ill try a few tomorrow... :-)

LOL.... Dont be scared! Bock, bock, bock....just kiddin.
Can't wait to see what you come up with. I usually shoot in raw too but when I started to do HDR, I started shooting in jpg because of space issues. Then I just decided to buy another memory card.
I auto bracket if I feel like it. That happens very rarely...
Might use it to try my hand at HDR some day.
i never use the feature...but sometimes I will shoot the same thing with different settings....
I owe RUFE three...so if i can get out today and try I will...but I think it will be raining.

You bracket only when you feel like it? How about feelin' like it today?
RR - just heard about today's earthquake - what are you hearing about it there? Was it the west coast?
Annette, this is a topic that I need to explore! Thank you for hosting today. I will be able to get to this assignment later tonight. Have a wonderful day!

Yes, West Coast but our eyes are on Sandy right now. We could even get snow out of it....

My Mother was telling me about it earlier this morning; I haven't listened to the news in a couple of days. I immediately thought of you, but she said she thought it was the west coast and possibly sending a tsunami towards Hawaii! I'm believing Sandy's going to lose her momentum. Be safe ~ we know you will be warm! ;)
