Les Brown was a graduate of Duke. His band was named, "The Blue Devils". Synchronistic with the current NCAA tournament, heh?
While my heart will root for St. Peter's, I've been a "Blue Devil" fan for many years. Now I can also root for Les Brown and his Blue Devils.

I grew up listening to Les Brown! Fabulous band!! Of course, I grew up to Harry James, Stan Kenton, Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Ray Anthony, Glen Miller, Charlie Barnett and others. The hey day of the big bands.

Enjoy this album!

They are based out of San Diego. It was part of our local Celebrity series which is put on by the local university. They have done some tours of back east. But were laid up due to covid.

I had a dear uncle who was my mother's brother. He died way before his time at the age of fifty.
This was in 1970. He had a large record collection mostly from the big band era. He only lived a
street away. It was a treat when I could go over and he would play some of his albums. I believe that
I started doing this as a pre-teen. I still have the last turntable that he had. An Empire, it was a study
in simplicity. It was driven by a flat belt and the shaft sat in a precision machined cup. A little light oil
keep it turning accurately. I loved the ritual involved. A record would be chosen it would be carefully
removed from its jacket. He had plastic liners to cover the records. Then a soft anti static cloth to clean
off any possible dust. A few short years ago I worked at a car dealer in their parts dept. Music was permitted. Some of the youngsters would bring in their CD"s. They did everything to them except play Frisbee. I was appalled.
Thanks for helping me resurrect some fond memories.

I wore my 78’s out, but continued to play them.

Thanks for sharing your memories.

Duke reminds me or the Dukes of Dixie Land.
Good stuff.

Mark, I lost your post about Sarah Vaughn. I just want to say that such greats as her and others
like Ella Fitzgerald, Dina Washington, Etta James, Dakota Staton. Peggy Lee, Patti Page. et.al
were one only editions never to be repeated. But we are fortunate to have recordings of them
that keeps their memory alive. Thanks for posting.

My latest post? I'd be happy to send you a link. If you go to www.youtube.com and use the search tool you can find tons of videos of a particular artist. Many are full albums.
