Don't know but I bet you know that MILAN is in Italy.

I just finished reading this post. I have quite a few friends that live in Milan, Italy, along with a few that reside in Sicily. I was actually surprised by the number of Hogs that have been referring to it as Malan. Just an observation.

Yeah even the Topic is spelled that way. However, spelling errors never really bother me. It's much less annoying than some of the offensive posts often seen on UHH.

Gosh, of all the suggestions here I think yours is a bit extreme. I think he was just looking for some tips for application with his current equipment not to spend several thousand dollars on a new camera and high end lenses.

It's a museum. Noise is not appreciated. Leave the noisy stuff at home.

But what would he place it on to be at the exact height of a wall hanging??

His head.

And you really think the camera will be steadier with that on top of his head than it would be with the camera alone in his hands?? How would he compose the image in the finder??

But if he doesn't have "quiet stuff" you suggest that he spends thousands of dollars for it so that he can take that picture of the Last Supper??. Quite honestly I don't think his camera is all that noisy to disturb a lot people milling about. The oohs and aahs of the visitors are probably louder.

No, the visitors are not louder. And he can use a smartphone. DSLRs are loud; they have no business clacking away in a place of contemplation.

Use a smartphone remote control app.

And get a mirrorless camera with good image stabilization; quiet and steady.

Thanks so much for all the great comments and advice. Sorry for the Milan misspell (double bad....my mother was a schoolteacher). Now as to the why take the photograph... Many years ago I was at the Louve (yes..the one in Paris) I was looking at the Mona Lisa with a room that was packed. Now if you've ever been there you know that the light sucks. But that's how the painting is displayed and that's the image millions of people have. So I found my crack in the crowd and took the shot. For me it really brings back the entire museum far better than a brochure could ever. The comments about the Grand Canyon...Well maybe after you've taken photographs for more than 60 years you will notice the Grand Canyon is NEVER THE SAME...it changes by the minute. So...I think I hear you guys saying D500 ISO1600 Nikon DX 35 1.8 @ F2 aperture priority and fire away from there.

We'll agree to disagree and let him decide. Let him be him and you be you and I'll be me. Everybody's happy.

I have been there many times and people do not care about noise from Cameras. I do understand Your point though. I always go with the flow. A Camera could never be louder than my Sons when they were little, it does depend on whether it is a weekday or the weekend.

I'm going there in May. Many sites say photography (without flash) is acceptable for private use only. I will be shooting with my Nikon D500. Any ideas about exposure including ISO would be welcome. I will also have my IPhone 6s with me as backup.

Try a small tripod from RRS or others and brace it on your chest. Also, shoot small bursts. Most will be blurry but usually one will be sharp.

Yes, tripods are most likely out. Maybe a small monopod. Like someone else said, why not just enjoy the beauty. My experience of attempting to capture paintings on a camera has been dissapointing. I think even the best photos of art work come off as pale imitations. You're more likely to get a good image of artwork in the museum brochure or online. We went to the Netherlands and Belgium in 2019 and I tried shooting some of Paul Reubens' paintings when we visited his home in Antwerp. Needless to say the results sucked. I couldn't match the colors and there was a lot of distortion because I couldn't shoot the paintings head on. Better to go online and find a nice photo if you need a reminder of what you saw.

There was a point when my daughter was young where I decided to leave the camera at home. I grew weary of watching her ballet and her softball games through a viewfinder; always jostling to get a good spot to shoot from. Better to enjoy the moment and record it in your memory. Just one man's point of view.

Superb advice! I've 'missed' many of my granddaughters best goal shots because I was fumbling with a camera...
