For many wildlife photographers and photo contest judges, wings up or wings down is the generally preferred BIF wing orientation for most bird species.

Here are some recent shots which captured these wing positions. Feel free to comment.

Depends on too many variables to answer but a very nice set anyway

Thanks, Jack.

You are correct regarding variables for best shot selection. My comments are based on my experience with a wildlife photo competition I have been involved with for several years.

Thanks, Barbara.

Best shot selection for BIF is highly subjective and depends a lot on personal preference. For birds, the up or down wing position seemingly highlights that unique attribute of the species plus it conveys action. However, great images have and will be captured in wing positions other than these.

Fabulous set. I like the brown pelican wings down especially. It shows the power these birds have to lift their heavy bodies.

Thanks for commenting, Robg. Plus, a great observation which I had not considered.

Great set. Nicely themed. That 1st pelican image looks distorted for some reason. Looks like the bird is all head. Is it just me?
