The Navy commissioned USS Savannah (LCS-28) on Saturday February 5th in Brunswick, Ga. We were there at Jekyll island camping and went over to take a look. One note is that the builder Austal buys from the company I retired from we sell them most all of their hull material.
The ship is the 14th Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship to enter the fleet, according to a news release from the Navy. It is the sixth ship to bear the name Savannah.
The ship was delivered to the Navy by Austal USA in June 2021. Austral constructed Savannah at its Mobile, Ala., shipyard in fewer than three years, according to a news release from the company.
While the ship was commissioned in Brunswick, it will be homeported at Naval Base San Diego, California. It is one wicked ship with the following specs. And yes that top speed is correct

Length. 418
Beam. 104 ft
Draft 14 ft
Propulsion
2× gas turbines, 2× diesel, 4× waterjets
Top speed 54 mph
Range 4,300 nautical miles

The design must be very efficient, but not very pleasing to my eye.

That could have been in a sci-fi movie twenty years ago.

Wow that is the ugliest war ship I have ever seen. I'd hate to be on that in 30 foot seas

It is very efficient but leans heavily towards function rather than form or asthetics

Obviously built for radar stealthiness and possibly to deflect incoming munitions. I hope there is enough deck space for crew to get outside during good weather - it would otherwise be like submarine duty!
