Great Blue Herons back in town

I wandered down to the lake because I heard a rumor. At one point some juvenile bald eagles charged the nests and about 20 adult GBHs took to the air…amazing sight.

Waite St bridge, Hamden CT, just north of New Haven.
On the south side, there’s a spit of land and there are a bunch of nests there…more on the land across the water to the west.
There’s an Osprey nest at the east end of the spit of land on the north side of the road, eagles nesting in the tidal estuary 2 miles southeast.
I haven’t been out in a while, so a bit rusty…forgot to BBF a few times. I also shoot as if I’m using film, so not a lot on the shutter.
Nikon Z7 II, 200-500, typically at 500, on tripod.

Ahhh...Lake Whitney...I used to hang out there all the time. Got a lot of pics of the usual suspects like Mute swans, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Canada Geese, Wood Ducks, Mallards, Wigeons, Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, Black Crowned Night Herons, Coots, Ospreys and the occasional Merganser or Grebe.
One year a pair of Mute Swans built their nest about 15 feet off the road and were quite the tourist draw. One Sunday morning I drove up and there was a large banner hanging from the fence along the road that said "It's Mother's Day" as the cygnets had hatched. The parents got them in the water immediately and started to teach them things like stomping their feet on the bottom to stir up vegetation. At one point along the shore the mother quickly got the little guys out of the water and someone shouted "Jaws!" Two 4 foot long carps came swimming up to the shore...a bit too late.
If you spent enough time there watching the same families you would sometimes see the numbers of ducklings, cygnets or goslings decline...victims of snapping turtles.
