Hi,
I bought a new SLR camera and it doesn't zoom or focus as well as my old point and shoot. any advice?
Thanks. Lauren.
Need a bit more information. What camera, which lens.
Some lens focus more slowly than others. the zooming features are much different in point and shoot than in DSLR lens.
Reading the manual would be a good place to start, a DSLR body does take a certain learning curve.

Any new camera, unless it's defective, should be able to auto focus so crisp that it's scary because it has multiple focus zones that it refers to while doing so. Many even have an auto "face" feature so it spends most of its effort focusing on one or many faces in a group portrait shot. I've got a $129 Canon with that feature but my Sony Alpha 55 dSLR will do it too.
And if you want to focus manually, many have a magnifier assistance feature to digitally zoom in on the subject while you are twisting the optical focus of the lens.
I'm also thinking that reading the manual would be a good idea.
