The painted buntings that live in the marsh behind our house will be heading north to nest in the next few weeks. There may be as many as five pair - I have had five females and four males at the feeders at one time. They will be missed! In spite of all the birding sources that say that buntings are attracted to thistle seed feeders, these buntings much prefer millet seed. A sunflower seed feeder attracts cardinals, jays, and grackles, and suet and peanut feeders attract woodpeckers (and jays, grackles, and others). Mixed seed thrown on the ground in the morning attracts all of the above plus brown thrashers.

Terrific! The “pair” is a wall-hanger. Thanks for sharing the buntings which are hard to catch just right.
Great set. I also really like the paired painted buntings the best

Thanks - they are small and flit around a lot!

Love the dove and squirrel shots.
I really enjoy your excellent photos of these critters in their habitat, Steve!.
Very nice. I haven't seen Painted Buntings in many years. Indigos do pass through each year, though.
Excellent captures, Steve!!
#3 is a particularly good capture!
Nice set Steve, particularly like the last 3.
