The second one is superb. For me the background detracts from the image creating an evocative response in me. For a subject like #1 I like the lonest possible focal length which softens the background. There are two Nikor Defocus Image Control lenses (AF DC-Nikkor 135mm f/2D and AF DC-Nikkor 105mm f/2D) that permit the photographer to dial in some aberrations around the edge of image while still producing a sharp center. That lens would render a pleasing background on similar subjects.
