If a computer is sending out a Bluetooth signal, is there a limit to the number of external speakers that can pair with it?

Typically just one (although there are some dual transmitters) Bluetooth is a one-to-one paired communication path with no broadcast mode to my knowledge,

I suspected that. I bought a pair of speakers that say they can both connect. I suppose you would want a pair to be able to connect. My speakers and someone else's wouldn't be able to pair at the same time, though.

Wiki says one BT master can communicate with up to 7 slaves in a “Piconet”, but I’ve never seen it done. Anybody?

Yep, let us know - I’ll be interested.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I won't be going there today.
My phone connects to the car and to my hearing aids, headset connects to laptop and iPad, so certainly 2 is a fairly common option. That said the car, tv etc will only connect to one device at a time so it depends on the device programming. Laird modules show up to 5 connections, at least on the quick look I had, while I couldn’t see anything on the Nordic RF (chipset) site, again only made a cursory search.
My phone connects to two pair of noise cancelling headphones at the same time.
