Has anyone tried this old fully manual lens on a Nikon D700?
Already have the AF-S Nikon 70-300 VR but wondering if the Tamron would give me any plus points (focus distance?)
Cheap copy here ($6). Worth that for some fun or is it a doorstop?

More like a paper weight.
No reason to get this lens when you have the excellent Nikon 70-300 VR.

Pretty much seems the case. Thanks
Totally disagree with the technocrats out there , it is refreshing to use a older design all manual lens , it is a little like driving a older classic car .

I thought the same thing. And, unless it is pathetic IQ, it would be fun to see what I could squeeze out of it.
Only with the lens mounted on your camera with YOU behind the camera will you be able to tell!

Your going to have to really squeeze hard. Tamron today makes no outstanding lenses, and years ago they were laughable.
I write this not to hurt your feelings. By all means go ahead and see what you can do.
But, if your in a once in a life time area, never to return, I personally would use the Nikon, hands down.
Again, it would make a better paper weight than a door stop (as you suggested) as a door stop it might get damaged, as a paper weight, it would be out where you can admire it. From afar.

The results are not improved by waves of nostalgia. Sometimes the results may be worse ... but never better.
Bought two for $4
Junk! Supposed to be Nikon F mount. Nope.
Sort of like buying a lottery ticket. No win.
I have a Vivitar 70-210 f/3.8 (not variable) AI lens. I didn't pay for it and I never use it. I guess I should try it out and see.
And so I tried it out with the Df. The D700 is close to the Df in term of picture quality I would say.
If that pic is your subject lens, It looks like it might be a canon fd mount which won't fit on your nikon unless it is an Adaptall series where the mount can be changed out, just saying.
