You are correct. Working with my dad doing carpentry work during the summers while in school we worked on a couple of the old fellows. Many of those peg holes were a bit offset, and the pegs were driven in green or water-soaked, giving them a slight crook and making them nearly impossible to remove. They had to be cut.
