Shafer Trail, Canyonlands N.P.
Another favorite stop of ours in C.N.P. is the Shafer Trail Overlook. Shafer Trail was named after the Shafer family who were Mormon pioneer settlers. John "Sog" Shafer used this trail to move cattle from summer pastures on the mesa top (now C.N.P.) to winter ground on the White Rim sandstone several rock layers down into the canyon. We always take the time to hike down to the Overlook and look in amazement at how this road/trail was constructed. In the past I've driven sections of the Shafer Trail and it is quite a thrill that includes beautiful scenes and stunning views. Hope these images do the trail justice...
1. Looking off to where the trail begins/ends.

2. Some people find the drive up the switchbacks horrorifying, to others, it is just a ride in the park!

3. where the trial passes below the overlook and on to its junction with the C.N.P. road.

Great shots, love the desert. Tightest switch back I ever did was here in North Idaho on Montana line. I had to back up once to make it around and it was still tight and steep. I was driving a Suzuki Samurai.
