This reminds me of years back when GM announced they were going to build a new compact car in the U.S. to compete with Japan. And, they did. But it was also said that all the equipment in the plant was made in Japan. 🙂

Sony also manufactures in Japan, Thailand, and China. Both my Sony A7 III and 24-105mm lens were made in China; I have used both extensively for four years and have had problems with neither. They appear to make their more upscale hardware elsewhere. My Sony A7R III was made in Thailand, and my Sony 100-400GM lens was made in Japan.
With China becoming an ever more genocidal, aggressive, and repressive country, I have started to pay attention to where things were manufactured. This is the key reason why I try not to buy stuff that is made in China anymore, even if the alternative is more expensive.
