I had a young vacuum salesman give me a sales pitch which involved a big lightbulb with cone reflector...he set it face down on my carpet but forgot to turn in off! All of a sudden it started smoking & a big black burnt spot in the middle of my carpet appeared .... the deer in the headlights look he gave us as his life flashed before his eyes was pitiful! Both my wife & I burst into laughter as I could barely say...." Son this is your lucky day! We have new carpet coming next week!"

Yup. Also “Abbott and Costello”, “The Honeymooners”, and many other sit-coms with routes in vaudeville.

True Story: When I was a kid of 4 years old in the 1950s, door-to-door salesmen were commonplace. One day a vacuum cleaner salesman knocked on our door, and proceed to show Mom and us kids his product, put some soot on the carpet to demonstrate its effectiveness. He even jumped on the vacuum to show just how strong and well-built it was. I then proceeded to jump on it, remember I was 4 years old, and broke it. The salesman left without a sale.
