New baby - Nikon Z7ii

I love my Z50 and have gotten some amazing work from it but I can't help feeling Nikon's abandoned it. I'd considered buying a Z6 back when I picked up the Z50 but the Z50 was such a huge upgrade over my old D200 I didn't feel the need. Now, I just feel as though I bet on the wrong horse.

The Zfc gets a lot of accolades for it's retro design and it does pack on some improvements over the Z50. Maybe some of that tech will roll into a future "Z50ii" (the main thing I miss is in-body stabilization) but I'm not holding my breath. Nikon can only release so much but it's hard not to feel as though its heart isn't in APS-C.

With a nice tax refund on the horizon, last night I ponied up and ordered a Z7ii (with the 24-200mm kit lens) from B&H. Forget about the Z9; I just don't need that much camera. The Z7ii will up my game and the 24-200 will easily cover my current needs. The Z50's not going anywhere and it gives me sufficient breathing room to allow me to gradually add full-frame lenses as needed.

So do you approve of the Z50 overall ? Wich lens kit did you get with it?

The Z50 was worth every penny I paid for it. I've wished for in-body stabilization a few times since I can't hand hold as steadily as I could back in the day but the camera itself is a marvel. If I felt Nikon had its heart in building on its foundation I'd gladly wait for the next iteration ("Z50ii"?).

I started with the 16-50mm f3.5-6.3 and 50-250mm f4.5-6.3 kit lenses which were the only Nikkor DX lenses available at the time. I added the 18-140mm f3.5-6.3 the second it was introduced then bought a very nice used Tamron 100-400mm f4.5-6.3. I added a Laowa 65mm f2.8 macro lens and a TTArtisan 35mm f1.4 lens but they're "special" use and don't get out much. I'm expecting great things from that Tamron on the Z7ii.

The 50 is an excellent rig for travel and even for wildlife for my wife since she doesn’t want much to carry…but is relatively underfeatured compared to more expensive bodies. My wife loves hers with the 2 kit lenses and declined to borrow my 500PF when I offered it to her.

*Astonishment!* The kit 24-200mm lens comes with the HB-93 lens hood!

I’ve just spent all week birding in eastern Florida with a D500 and Z7II. For a casual group dinner on the beach , I brought my Z50 and 24-200 lens, which was perfect. Such a joy to carry such a small and capable camera.

Agreed. The kit telephoto zoom does a nice job and doesn't add much weight. I'm glad I bought the Tamron, though, because it give me an effective 600mm reach which is hard not to love. Just wish the body had stabilization. =^(

I can't imagine that we won't see additional DX Mirrorless from Nikon since they have gone to the trouble and expensive of designing and producing DX Mirrorless Glass. It's early in the process.

I would (like to) think there is a D500 mirrorless equivalent on the way.

As the market is getting "rationalized," I am expecting to see a move to fewer image formats along with the shift away from DSLRs. Historically, there was only a tiny niche market for "half frame" cameras, and that had mostly faded away by the end of film days. APC was only a crutch until semiconductor process technology caught up with the ability to make full frame sensors economically...

Personally, I was surprised when Nikon released a DX Mirrorless, as I thought they would take this opportunity to kill-them-off. Now that they have released one, and made specific Z series DX glass, I would GUESS they will continue with these. DX does have a cost, size and weight advantage, making them good entry level items. Who knows?
