I'm looking for a workshop. I first thought about South Dakota but then Arkansas caught my eye. Has anyone been to either of them. In South Dakota the Badlands, Custer State park and The Needles are some of the good locations- are there others some of you know about. In Arkansas the Ozarks are popular. I'd also be interested in night sky and Milky Way photography.

Arkansas can be hit or miss for fall color. Much depends on summer heat and rainfall. They have numerous qwaterfalls that mostly run only after rain. Many of these waterfalls are down steep banks. I dont see tour groups there probably for these reasons. However if your schedule is flexibible and you are reasonably fit, there are lots of opportunities. Tim Earnst wrote a great book on waterfalls. I planned a trip with his book.. heres the link to that album.

I plan to return when conditions are right and would consider guiding for 1 or 2 people.

You have presented a classic example of wanting "it all"with little effort. The location of a workshops no where as important as is the person/s conducting it. I followed a Canon Ambassador of Light from Yellowstone to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Kalispel, MT. What that man had to offer and relay to me was far more important than where he presented it. Workshops are just what the name implies, WORK! Night sky and the Milky Way can be shot from anywhere on this planet, no workshop necessary. Workshops require very early morning show-times. Milky Way means out very late at night with much travel-on-foot (walking). Lugging gear is usually required. Military aviation is the only vocation with worse working conditions than photography. The hours are killers! Sleep? Maybe, and in a car if lucky. Start at the beginning and find the workshop designed to teach what you seek. Its location is secondary at best.

The Badlands is an amazing place to visit and photograph. Simply driving through the park will present you with more than enough opportunities to shoot some spectacular landscapes as well as wildlife. The big horn sheep I use as my avatar was shot there. It is also one of the best places in the upper Midwest for night sky shooting. The views of the Milky Way are breathtaking, especially if you are out after midnight when there is no moon. Adam Woodworth's book "Night Sky Photography" is a good read if you are interested. There are also numerous internet tutorials on the subject. Lodging is available in Wall, or you can spend the night in the park itself.

The Black Hills offer a wide variety of opportunities as well. Again, a simple drive through the area will present you with more than enough locations. It all depends on what you want to focus on (pun intended). Are you looking for a workshop to hone your skills or for guided tours? They are different animals.
