first number times second number plus the addition of the 1st & 2nd numbers

7 x 1 = 7 + 7 + 1 = 15

Yep, my head feels better now!
Thanks

7 + 7 +1 is really not the rule for 71. It just happens to work because of the 1 in 71. but def not the rule.

What Paradise Pirate wrote was:

(7x1) + (7+1) = 15

Or, the sum of the two numbers multiplied by each other, and the two numbers added together.

This is the rule, and works for any of the values in the original puzzle, and is the CORRECT ANSWER.

Once again, congratulations, Paradise Pirate, for being the first to get it correct AND provide the explanation.

May I make a suggestion?
If thereโ€™s another post similar to this, I suggest that anyone who comes up with the answer post only the answer and not how it was calculated. Providing the solution prevents others from trying to solve. Let the OP provide the solution.

the rule is:
for any number xy:
((y+1) * x) + y

so: for 45 it would be ((5 +1) * 4) +5 = 29
and for 56 it would be ((6+1) * 5) + 6 = 41

if we take the sum of the two numbers multiplied by each other and then add them together, no way we could have an odd answer as we do with 15, 29, 5, 41 etc. and that rule makes no sense.

and besides - isn't (7x1) + (7+1) = 15 really 14????

Mathematics.

Americans may abbreviate it differently.

Clearly, you have not understood the problem.

If you tried applying the rule that you say makes no sense, you will find that it does.

For 45:

4x5 = 20
4+5 = 9

20+9 = 29

71 = 15

multiply 7x1=7
Add 7+1=8
7+8=15

Works for all sets, e.g:

7x2=14
7+2=9
14+9=23
