The sector has only been up to after a few days and fols are already posting, asking and answering questions. and I put up a few basic tutorials and have more in the works.

I hope the traffic will keep going. Many of the well-intentions sections tend to fizzle out so I hope this one will enjoy some longevity.

The section is for everyone who is interested in light, light usage, gear, aesthetics, control and technique. It is NOT confined to studio work, portraiture or commercial photography.

I promise not to bang on about this too much but I am told that "managers" need to promote their sections so every once in a while I might post a reminder. All are welcome!

Light is light whether it comes from an old rust Frensl spot, a modern flas system, the sun or the mood (possibly at the same time). It comes in all comes shapes and volumes. Let's talk about it!

Clik on "All Sections" scroll down to "The Dynamics of Photograhic Lighting" and click again!

I think one problem with sections fizzling is that there are so many and people aren't aware of the new ones. I hope this one has a long and prosperous life.

Thanks so much for starting this new section E.L. It’s really needed and sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience is very generous. I’ve added it to my subscriptions.

Thank you for creating, posting and putting in the sweat equity Mr. Shapiro. I hope to learn much more in terms of technique, history, equipment and tricks of the trade. You are the best.

Thanks for creating this section. Coincidentally, I am working on an auction that is a major downsizing of a commercial photo studio, in specific, product photography. The sheer number and variety of lights is astounding but all of them are either massive Strobotons or various sizes of hot lights including several models by Mole-Richardson. As the auction nears, I will post a notice for anyone interested in lights so they can look at our auction website and decide if they want to acquire any of the "old school" stuff like the big keg light in your first photo.

To whet the appetites out there, we will be selling over 50 Bogen/Calumet/Manfrotto light stands, tripods, jibs and boom arms, clamps of nearly every description, over 50 hot lights and finally cameras by Hasselblad and Nikon. Now, everything has been in heavy use for decades and none of it looks pretty, and some need repair but mostly it is serviceable. The cameras all need service, some need parts. We try to be a bit more specific on discovered defects in our descriptions but encourage buyers on this auction to expect repairs being needed and to bid accordingly. Yes, for a modest fee and shipping costs, we will ship to those out-of-town folks. For those reading this who are interested, PM me direct and I will send the web address when we finally post the auction. In the meantime let's all start enjoying EL's new section on lighting!

Good thing I am not h there, I'm afraid I would buy up all that stuff. My accountant would quit and my wife would murder me in my sleep. I already have a hoard of old gear. Hmmm. I might sean in a few replacement heads, etc! Shhhhhhhhhh.!

Even if it's cosmetically poor, much of that older gear is virtually indestructible. Someof the old Mole Fresnels fell out of favour for a while because they need to be used with tungsten films and required lots of filtration. Nowadays, with custom white balance, any light source can be use and the light quality from some of that stuff is incredibly good and very controllable. The old studio would "mothball" that stuff rather than sell it off. Some use traditional tungsten lamps, later modes use quartz-halogen lamps- both are still manufactured.

Old Sppedotrons, Braun Hazy Lights (etc) are big and ugly- some of them look like heavy construction equipment. Nonetheless, if they have been in current use and the capacitors and connect cables are in good working order, they have great potential. Most of all of the htat stuff have no auto or TTL integration- they are used manually.

The problem with so many of the old strobes is that the repair is extremely expensive. Many used Mil-Spec connectors and costly high-voltage cables are cost and can set you back to repair or replace. If, however, they are not frayed, burned, or broken, they just "keep on truckin'"! Oh, Shipping can get expensive!

The light stands for Manfrotto is very good- especially the older models. If they need repair, there are still parts available and many can be fixed with common hardware sort nut and bolts.

ABSOLUTELY!!!- by all means, make up a detailed list, shoot some images of the gear, if possible and post it in the section along with details of the auction- starting bids, fixed prices- whatever the case! If the prices are reasonable and folks are appreciative of some of the brands and models, things should sell well.

If you need any information on any of the more obscure models, etc, let me know, I am familiar with a lot of older units and their workings.

Old Hasselblad gear I still enjoy a decent niche market. There are still independent repair shops that can tune them up. Unless they are severely abused, they too are semi-distractable in continual use. Some of the lenses are still compatible with current digital models.

Really interested in the lighting section but not sure how to get into it. Would appreciate if someone could list the steps/clicks to get there.

The "button" (or whatever you call it) to get to "All Sections" is actually near the very bottom of every UHH page. It's easy to miss, though, because it's so small!

Mirabile Dictu! You're right. I never look that far down and never read the fine print.
