[quote=daldds]In 1948, one of my bar mitzvah presents was a Kodak Duaflex II and basic dark room kit.

I got a fountain pen (and cash) for my bar mitzvah...but I have to tell you that the first photo you posted in particular makes me happy you got the camera! It reminds me of the Tower of Belem in Lisbon...where is it?

My first camera was a Kodak box brownie. It was in the 1930's my father let me use and finally gave it me.
In the 1950's while was serving in the army in Germany, i purchased a used leica M3. When my father saw the camera, he intimated what a gem the camera was so remembering his many kindnesses i took it off my neck and gave it him.He loved the camera but often would shoot without film.i never could figure our why

i was never a professional photographer but the hobby has give me the greatest of pleasure.
This rear i purchased a used Canon 800d and its a great camera for a senior citizen.I play around now in the house with macrophotography.
Understanding and editing my images in Lightroom Classic consumes my daylight hours.

I would like to share the motivating reason of buying my first camera.
In 1965 I was a 14 year old in school and a classmate brought a nice looking camera to school. I requested him to allow me to hold it and get a feel. In short he told me to Get Lost.I decided at that moment to buy my own camera asap.
Six years later I got my first stipend in a company .I used almost the entire stipend and bought a Agfa click 3 camera which used 120 film.I got it devloped and printed from a studio close by.He charged me a bomb.A few more stipends and I bought the All in one Camera book by W D Emanuel ,a developing tank, trays , contact printer, developer ,fixer etc and I could expose the film and make prints at home.
It was fun then and still is today.
It would be nice to hear from you how you started this beautiful hobby or business

I would like to share the motivating reason of buy... (show quote)

1974 and my Dad, a part time wedding photographer was documenting my high school football and sports career. He built a darkroom in the basement and I quickly had a new pick line at school, “ Come on over. I’ll pull the dark curtain, turn off the lights and we will see what develops!”
I soon learned that girls who fell for that, lol, also liked to fancy themselves as models. So I bought a roll of backdrop paper and two umbrellas with lamps and suddenly I was going headshots and swimsuit folio work. Which only lead to more anticipated time in the “darkroom.”
I was 17 and having the time of my life after school. Of course, everybody had to clear out by 5:30pm before parents got home from work!

In 1973 I was assigned to the 504 Air Force Band stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We toured the U.S. and Canada an average of 10 days a month. I used my irs refund to purchase a Yashika Tl Electro with a 50 mm lens. We all shot slide film and I usually took 3 rolls of film a trip. The camera worked well for me and taught me a lot about exposure. Unfortunately on a trip to Pikes Peak it was stolen. I still have a desk full of slides I haven’t looked at in years.

Heard about the horrible parents at sporting events? All true. Daughter played travel softball. Had to find a way to get away from said parents without looking totally rude as these same parents are actually decent people away from the ballfields. Thus began my sports photograghy hobby.

After my freshman year in college, I went on a trip with a friend of mine. I used my parent's point and shoot, while he has an SLR. He was taking pictures all the time, while I could only take them during the day in good light.
When I got the pictures back, I wasn't happy with them. So I used some of the money that I was saving from my summer job and bought an SLR from NY.
I have been taking pictures, off and on, since then. And upgrading also. Maybe too much upgrading, but what the hey, life is short.

I have pictures that I know were taken in 1966, the year I was married. I have no idea what the camera was or how I got it, I do remember that it took flashcubes. The first camera that I can recall was a Canon AE-1 which I bought new from Simpson Sears, probably around 1978. From that to a Canon T90, an Elan E, 20D, 40D, Sony DSC-W830 and Canon 5D Mk III. I still have those cameras except for the T90 with I traded on the Elan, probably the one I should have kept.
