On my property I have several black cherry trees. Black Cherries are not just dark colored cherries but a different species. The species is Prunus serotina . These are bit hard to photograph as the wind blows the flowers and berries around.

There was a lot of fruit on the black cherry trees around here last year. Birds gobbled them up in no time. The cherries we grow in the orchard are from the Old World - Prunus avium and P. cerasus. Your tree is a different species, as you noted. It is native to North America and is ecologically important for pollinators, butterflies, moths, birds, etc.
