You should watch the movie Crazy People with Dudley Moore. He plays an ad executive who ends up in a mental institution. He and his fellow patients come up with an ad campaign that really would be a breath of fresh air, truth in advertising. How about slogans like, "Buy our cars, they suck less." :D

Yes - funny movie. I think greed might also play a part in getting people to buy into a scam.

Next time you see a shop with an advert in the window
"UP TO 50%, 60% OR 70% OFF"
Go in and ask them to SHOW you what has this amount off, bet they can't
A trick here is to label the rail "from 5`s" you can bet your life all those have gone and the ones left are far more expensive. ;-(

The problem is that 'Up to' any number also includes the number Zero. So, even if it's 1% discount off the RRP it still falls in the band of 'UP TO 70% OFF'.

I know that, the point I was making is ask them to show you something with the maximum quoted sum, if they can not then it is an illegal advert
My favorite gripe is. For a limited time we will give you two, just pay the additional shipping and ... (you guessed it) processing!
Or for the next 20 minutes, because we cant do this all day...
It is amazing what processing cost! They are already pulling one item off the shelf but it costs an additional $15.00 to $20.00 for them to pick up the second one.
Do they really think the public is that stupid? I guess we are because more and more commercials are doing this.

I don't think it is an illegal advert. If it said "70% OFF", then I agree. But, the point is that by adding "UP TO ..." which, as I pointed out, also includes 0%, I don't think you can claim it's illegal. Misleading, perhaps, but only that.
Who was it that said "a sucker is born every minute"?

Thanks, I should have remembered that!

Are people as dumb as the retailers think?
The short answer is that enough people are!
As John Ruskin said There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey.
