The overall effect is OK but I'm left wondering if the fuzzy drop shadow is something that a pencil sketcher would do.

I don't know, maybe somebody else will. I've never done a pencil sketch in my life.

Pencil sketches often use a bit of rough shading around the subject to suggest a background and set the subject apart from the white paper. Curmudgeon, I'm not sure if that's what you were going for. To me, the drop shadow looks too even, soft and uniform - looks decorative, suggesting a design element, rather than the spontaneous loose look of a pencil sketch. Nothing wrong with "decorative" if that's what you were intending. I'd also like to see more greys in the bird and foliage - less of the black and white pen and ink look.

After finishing the sketch I opened a new color layer, kind of an orange brown and placed it behind the sketch layer and played with PS Blend Modes until I found one I liked and this image was the one I liked. Perhaps I mislabeled it when I called it a Pencil Sketch? Would this then be a true Pencil Sketch?

If I didn't know this one was a photo, I'd assume it was a very fine pencil sketch/drawing.
