East of Phoenix, a diversion dam slows and spreads a broad reach of the Salt River. Seasonally, this offers welcome respite for large numbers of migrating ducks and geese. Occasionally, when a hawk or eagle appears overhead, whole rafts of these flush explosively from the surface and wheel upstream or down until the sky clears. A week ago, while birding along the shore, I witnessed three of these mass take-offs in less than hour. Each time I scanned the sky looking for the responsible raptor and each time, found it empty. There were no fishermen, no boats, no coincident aircraft. However, in the distance, now absent the birds, an unfamiliar shape regularly surfaced, disappeared and eventually reappeared in camera range —In my viewfinder swam the predator probably accountable for all that noise and tumult beneath an empty sky.
I caught him Thursday at Granite Reef. Some vermilion flycatchers were having a fit!

VEFLs are close to the top of my favorite birds list.
(Once again, the famous VEFL red is visible in the download)
