And reading the specs I’m glad I didn’t wait on ordering the Olympus OM-1. It looks like a fine camera and the extra 5mp would be nice, but as I suspected it is more video centric. Not being a guy that does a lot of video I’m not sure how great the gains are in video capability and if it’s worth the upgrade for video shooters. It definitely is well behind the OM-1 when it comes to stills.

It’s an upgrade to the GH5. If you want an upgraded Lumix mainly for stills then obviously it would be an upgrade to the G9 ... which is not yet even a rumor.

Which is why I ordered the OM-1 last week instead of waiting. I figured the upgrades would be more video centric.

If I want video I would get a video cam or cine cam.
I haven't seen a video person at weddings use a camera video.

How many weddings do you go to? A cine cam is great for those that can drop that kinda coin on one, but the fact is that current mirrorless offerings from most manufacturers are just as if not more capable at video than dedicated video cameras. The reason the AP switched to Sony a couple of years ago was that at that time only Sony made a camera suitable for professional photojournalism that was also capable of professional video.

The YouTube reviewers are mostly positive about the GH6, but many of them are still writing and testing. I suspect we'll see many more reviews in the coming weeks, after people get their own units to play with. So far, all the review units seem to be pre-production loaners that the reviewers had limited hours to play with.

The most significant thing about these new announcements of the OM-1 and GH6 is that they are big upgrades to two very different cameras that use the same system of lenses. Each has a target audience with specific needs. The camera designers have been listening, and put loads of new features and refined old ones into them.

Still photographers will prefer the OM-1, and hybrid photographers and filmmakers will prefer the GH6. The GH6 is undeniably for video professionals who need a *small, lightweight, relatively inexpensive camera, with smaller, lighter lenses than can be designed for larger format sensors.* It is jam-packed with video-centric features and expanded audio controls. It is a capable stills camera, but there are better choices for those who want stills.

I'm still deciding what to think. I have a GH4. One of my twins has a GH5, and the other has a GH4. We film together on occasion. I would LIKE a GH6, but there are new memory cards, new batteries, and other new accessories I would want with it. Then there is the pair of drool-worthy Leica f/1.7 zooms (10-25mm and 25-50mm). I may well get a GH5 Mark II and one lesser lens, instead.

Enjoy your OM-1 and don't look askance. It is a fine machine, has received rave reviews from Micro 4/3 skeptics, and will sell well for a niche product, I think.

Yeah, that 10-25 is tempting. It was a no brainer to get the new 12-40 Pro with the OM-1. The only M4/3 lens I have in that range is the 14-150, good walk around lens but limited. I was lucky enough to have some cash from selling equipment I don’t use any more so my decision was easy. Once the OM-1 arrives I’ll sell the E-M1X.

Have you seen any comparisons of the OM-1 with the E-M1X? I don't really know much about the E-M1X other than it was designed for sports and wildlife photographers.

I’ve seen a couple, but since I’ve been shooting an E-M1X for a while now I’m aware of the differences. I wasn’t really planning on buying a new M4/3 camera but AF that’s twice as accurate and three times as fast was hard to ignore and 2 stop improvement in low light didn’t hurt either. I also like the smaller size. I like the E-M1X but it’s bigger than my full frame Z7. The faster frame rate is nice too, but unless I come up with money for the 150-400 Pro to replace my 100-400 I’ll be limited to 25 fps instead of 50 fps. I’m really looking forward to receiving it in about 3 weeks.

I see video people at wedding using still cameras for video very often.

Yeah, it's just that they look like still photographers! That is part of the appeal of mirrorless cameras in general. They don't make you look like a documentary filmmaker or a news reporter, unless you put them in accessory cages or on gimbals or put a bunch of audio gear on top of the shoe.

I don't understand why the em1 and G9 is big as a ff camera and bigger than apps cameras.

Yeah but I often saw their camera clearly setup for video, cage, gimbal, audio and also video light (rather than flash).

When I first got my Z7 I wasn’t surprised that it was smaller than my APS-C DSLR’s, the D500 and D7200, but was surprised that it was no bigger than my M4/3 G9. When I switched to the E-M1X I knew it was big because of the built in vertical grip. I’m looking forward to the size of the OM-1

A lot of folks compare camera body sizes and go, "What's the big deal about Micro 4/3 being smaller and lighter?" Well, it's the LENSES. A full kit of three to five Micro 4/3 lenses and a body will be MUCH smaller, lighter, and less costly than a full frame body and lenses. A full frame mirrorless can be a lot lighter than a full frame dSLR, but the full frame lenses are still about the same size, overall.

If you want a lighter *kit,* which is what most Micro 4/3 users want, you simply can't get it with a larger system.
