I would love to do that! But maybe in a paraglider or something like that. I would like to go slow and low

Well...yeah. But you can't really control your direction or speed in a balloon. I would like to plan hiking routes and find water supplies and that sort of thing. And maps are good for that but not always up to date or accurate. More than once I've depended on springs on maps that weren't there or were dry. Even with the best topo maps available.
I would like to use a drone for route and water finding but they are illegal in most National Parks. I wonder what the minimum flying speed is for the aircraft in the original post?

The airplane was an Ercoupe with a stall speed of 42 knots and a cruse speed of 83 knots, here is a photo of the actual airplane.

Wow. Beautiful airplane! But too fast for what I want to do. Thanks. When was the photo taken? I just went back to the OP and got my answer. The year before I was born!

Exactly what is it you want to do? The 42 kts. stall speed should allow most opportunities but at that speed you could turn around and fly it backwards and hover at your desired target. I did that in UPT in a Cessna 172 which is larger and heavier than the Ercoupe.
