Dove Love

This charming couple showed up on Valentines Day for an unscheduled portrait session. I was really busy in the kitchen, but they were enjoying each others company and a snack of winter softened hackberries, and didn't mind waiting while I poked the camera out of the back door at them every few minutes. (note to self: in future, do not plan to make kefir, bread, and braised venison on the same afternoon!)

I know very little about birds other than they fly but I've been told that doves mate for life. Can anybody confirm or deny that statement?

I have heard that too, and I remember seeing something even before I was a birder that in my mind confirms it. I was driving when I noticed a dove that had been hit and killed by a car. Sitting on a signpost very close to the dead dove was another dove looking very very dejected. It's sadness was very apparent in every thing about the bird, it's pose and the way it's head hung down. From that time I have always believed that doves mate for life.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Rcarol & ShelbyDave, I gather that they do often, but not always, mate for life, but if they lose a mate whey will take another.
