December 1965, a close call…..
While sailing out of Boothbay, ME, heavy fog rolled in reducing the visibility to zero. On the way out, however, I had marked a waypoint at the buoy at the mouth of the harbor on my handheld GPS. Following the GPS back we almost sailed into the buoy. Stupidly, we sailed again the next day in spite of fog. At one point we heard a horn from an approaching ferry returning to the harbor. Then we heard on the radio "Yes, I saw that sailboat bear off on the radar."
That happened to me too, but in tge Pacific Ocean. Glade we were all safe.
You should talk to a screen writer; you could sell that story for a movie!

Commuted, from Hammond to Mays Train Yard in Harahan daily, down the old Hwy 51 swamp road then along the Mississippi River on 61, very familiar with the fog you’re talking about.
So bad you could get lost in your front yard.

While not in a boat, I did experience an extremely dense fog one time. Driving home from work late one night, I had to open the drivers side door to see the stripe, creeping along! Thankfully it was only a block or two! It is scary! Nothing to compare to being in a boat, with zero reference point!
