People ask if they need a new camera. The cartoon below reminds me of some responses such a question receives.

If this is a pop quiz question, I'm scoring 100%. Answer: OF COURSE YOU DO!

If you have to ask the question the answer is no.

Does one need a new one? In most cases, probably not.

If you want it, you should buy it. People ask questions like that for confirmation. I never ask, though. I think about it and decide if I can justify the purchase. My wife used to ask me, "Can we afford it?" So practical!

For the most of those questions the answer is "No you don't need it". People who do need a new camera do not ask such a question.

If I bought everything I wanted, I'd be in serious financial trouble!

But seriously: It is easy to fall into the consumer trap that if we don't have the newest and latest product, we are missing out. Or that we need to have it because we somehow "deserve" it. I know some people who have accumulated more stuff than they have time to actually use. And they continue to buy more and more stuff - the latest this and latest that. But they don't seem to be any happier than those who only buy what they absolutely need. If anything, they are less happy, never fully satisfied with what they have. At least not for very long.

You need it to cure your GAS problem.

I’m thinking “amen”, cuz I NEVVVVUH ever even consider asking that question.

My first really useable digital was 5DII. Still have it and never use it. It can make almost as nice an image, under many circumstances, as my later, much better cameras. If I were in the “do I truly need a new camera” doubters club, that 5DII would see plenty of use.

But you can treat the symptoms. It’s a maintanence regime, never a cure ;-)

My wife never asked that. She just said “We can’t afford it”. She’s now my EXwife.

Funny thing, that ever since the split I’ve bought pretty much whatever I want, and still manage to keep a year’s pay in the bank in case of typhoon. Never had such a rainy day fund when we were married.

Reading through this thread staring at my new Z9 with attached Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, kind of feeling guilty, maybe.
