"Me" or "I"

This one annoys me. Some people think they will appear intelligent if the avoid using the word "me." Instead, they use "I" where it doesn't belong. The link below explains the usage, but I have a very simple way to decide which one to use: leave the other person out of the sentence and see what word should go there. "They gave an award to Bill and I." You hear that type of thing all the time. Let's try it without "Bill." "They gave the award to I." That doesn't sound very good, does it?

That is the way I taught my students to determine the correct word.

I think I first heard that in grammar school - an outdated institution. Now it's elementary, moving on to middle and then high. It should have been "lower."

School doesn't teach anymore. It indoctrinates and social engineers. This is one grain in the vast sandy beach of things our generation knows and of which the last two generations are woefully ignorant.

FINALLY!! Someone (Jerryc41) gets annoyed by the same things that annoy me. It's vs its is another one. It's easy to use the correct version in its place! It's means "it is." With that translation, you should never go wrong. Further, I vs. me; she vs. her--these are just as basic. "I gave she a bath." Really?

As a broadcaster for 50 years, that drives me nuts. And you hear it from most everybody! But...what does that have to do with photography?

You hit the nail on the head! That is the best description of what school is all about that I have seen. And sadly, the higher one goes in the journey through education, the indoctrination and social engineering just intensifies.

It's one of my pet peeves. What I can't understand is that the misuse creeps into places where people are working from scripts. One would expect writers to know better!!!!!

Everyone should have taken Latin in high school. You finish with excellent grammar skills and then don't use the nominative case where the objective case is correct. My wife yells at me when I correct people which I shouldn't do but it bugs the c.. out of me. I had an employee with a masters Degree in engineering who would say, "me and DJ are going to the movie".

Yea, you might wind up using up one of your "aw-shit"s here.
