When I start my iMac 21, Finder, Keychain, Two factor authentication, and a video program (Capto) also start. I shut each one down and continue. When I go to Preferences and look at what's supposed to start, the only program listed is Chrome. How can I prevent the others from starting.

Don’t know--I have never had that problem. I don’t use Chrome, so perhaps it has something to do with it.

When you shut down or restart, uncheck the box "Reopen windows when logging back in"

They are probably listed in one of these directories
/System/Library/LaunchAgents
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
~/Library/LaunchAgents
~/Library/LaunchDaemons

open a terminal then cd to each of these and see if they are there.

I have that problem on my iMac. I am using Safari and the software apps that also start include Kensington Works, an app that I don’t use with my mouse, and some others. I use Clean My Mac and that seems to find bits and pieces relevant to the problem but, hey presto, the next time I turn on my Mac the same issue is there.

Would love to know what is causing this. I have only had the problem for a few months.

I already do that. It doesn’t make any difference.

If the program name shows in the "login Items" list, it will start. If you don't want to see it, then check the "hide" box. Also check to see if you have another user, such as Admin or Root that has these set to start. If not, then there may be a setting in the "Preferences" for each individual program.

They are being run as Launch Agents or Daemons and not Login Items

CleanMyMac has an option to remove/disable Launch Agents and Daemons

on the left hand panel, select Optimization, then on the right panel select Launch Agents and disable the ones that you don't want.

Thank you. I will try that later on.
