Vivitar Model 283 Electronic Flash Two versions (China built and Japan built)

I am offering two Vivitar 283 Flash Units.
One is an earlier model, Vivitar 283, labeled “sensor” on the sensor boss. Shown in first photo. Made in Chhina and probably usesable with most cameras. Check Google for "Electronic Flash Sync Voltages Risk".
The other is Vivitar auto thyristor 283 labeled “auto thyristor” on the sensor boss as shown in second photo with manual. This one was made in Japan and has been identified by a UHH reader as risky to use with modern Digital camaeras, so I. would use it only with older Film cameras.
Both fire from my Nikon cameras but that is the only testing I have done. Batteries not included. Asking $7.50 each or $12.50 for both to one buyer in one mailing. Shipping $14.50 for both or individually if separate buyers..
No returns.

These are good flash units. I had one I used for over 25 yrs. They came out in the 70's. One needs to exercise great caution using them with digital cameras. The triggering circuit in older flash units can damage the camera. The trigger voltage is higher in these than in flashes designed for digital cameras. They are excellent when used in a slave flash set-up since they are not attached to the camera.

Good warning! I should have mentioned it. There is information on the Internet (Google" "Vivitar 283 Flash Voltage Prroblem") about this issue and there is even an article on how to modify the unit to eliminate the problem. Honestly, it looks like more work that it's worth!

Can you tell me where are those units made? Japan, Korea or China?

Probably make great "slave" units, I had one back when they were new!! Yes, watch out for voltage on attaching to late model digital equipment.

turn the flash on , of camera , use a voltmeter between the center pin and base .Older flash show about 100 volts , newer ones 5 volts .If they show 100 or so volts , dont use them on newer cameras .

The one that is made in China is safe to use. The one made in Japan is not safe for modern cameras.

That works.
Mother Nikon informed me that their cameras could withstand 100 V.+ sync voltage. I was inquiring for my D 50, so it might be advisable to check.
