I found out why my year old PC (custom built) is not compatible with W11.

Apparently TPM is not enabled in the Bios. I'm going to enable it. I'm not over anxious upgrading to Win11. I love Win10 and have not had any issues with it since upgrading in July, 2015, within two weeks of it's original issue. I'll wait a while, allowing the "bugs" to be identified and resolved, and then upgrade.

Maybe this is helpful to a few Uhhers?

Windows 10 has support until sometime in 2025, as I understand it. I am sticking with it until then and go from there. Maybe some apps now for windows will be written for other OSes like Linux. Or maybe I’ll run a VM for Windows 10 under a Linux box. Who knows what three years will bring in technology?

I looked up the specs for upgrading. It's kinda daunting for the average user who has never heard of TPM. Many of my friends (more elderly than I) would not be able to even find out if It's enabled. But my computer is only a year old so I don't anticipate problems. TPM is enabled on mine. Still, I'll wait. I read somewhere that Microsoft is allowing free updates for a while then will be charging, but I have not been able to confirm that.

Makes me wish I'd gone with MAC.

I tried the Win 11 upgrade and it brought my laptop to it's knees, performance-wise. Fortunately you can backstep back to Win 10.

I just recently got a new computer with Windows 10 on it. I had been using Win 7. I'll wait before considering Win 11. With Win 10 I can't use the card reader I used with 7. I can't remember if I am supposed to install a pgm for the reader. Looking through my discs I don't see one.

I'll wait too. USB readers should install automatically by just plugging into a USB port. Try, removing it, shut down the PC, plug in, and then boot. My readers are from Win 7 and still work just fine.

Good luck,
Mark

Something obscure that casual users never heard of until now!

Ok so TMP = Temporary Files.

One question is why were they disabled in the first place? In the BIOS of all places??

Opened BIOS, enabled TPM and ran the compatibility check. MY PC is compatible!! That makes sense to me now. I had a hard time believing it was not, given it was custom built in late 2020.
I emailed my local computer shop (who built it) and one of the techs indicated it was probably the TPM was not enabled in the BIOS as the cause for failing the compatibility check.

I'll wait for a while, but will eventually upgrade to Win11.

I don't know why, but it had no impact on the performance of the computer. Perhaps the "tech" who built it forgot to enable it?? It only took a minute to fix.
