I use the Tokina 100 mm macro f 2.8 lens on a tripod and with significant f 11- f 22 small aperture for Depth of field , which is still shallow in macro, there is no need for VR. I use VR on all of my other lenses, but do not miss it in macro. Also, autofocus can be a problem in macro, since the shallow DOF necessitates very careful selection of point of maximal resolution (focus point), which sometimes forces me to switch to manual focus . Manual focus with this lens on my D810 or D700 is not a problem.
