My wife’s Nikon 24-120 f4 lens appears to have issues with VR. When pushing down the shutter half way the image in the viewfinder is shaking all over the place. Once that stops the camera will take the picture in focus. I’m assuming the gyroscope in the lens is at fault. In all the years We’ve been shooting there have been no issues with her Nikon gear. I guess it needs a trip to Nikon service center. Will Nikon inform me of the repair cost before proceeding once they get the lens? BTW this does not occur with any of her other lenses that have VR. Thanks for any info you can provide
Yes, you will be given a quote on the repair cost.

Ok thanks for the info. Are they fairly easy to work with at the service center?
Try putting the vr slider into "active" rather than normal.

Thanks I already tried that to no avail. Cleaned contacts on lens and camera. It works fine with vr turned off. I bought it used here in the hog in perfect condition but this is one of the things that happen when you buy used sometimes. If the cost is too high to fix I’ll just buy another used one I guess
"...Will Nikon inform me of the repair cost before proceeding once they get the lens?"
Kevin yes and they will also let you know if they will service it.
If it doesn't have a US serial number you'll have to look else where to have it serviced.
Below is what Nikon will look for... I valid US serial number.
Wishing you all the best with your wife's optic...
btw, I've used Nikon Service in NY on several occasions...
They are very good... and warranted their work for 90 days
Image Credit belongs to Ken Rockwell...
Thomas thank you for the info

After 10 years my 24-120 started acting flaky with manual focus. Had it repaired and now have a lens that is as good as new. Worth the $ considering the massive use it has had.
I understand. This is my wife’s favorite lens and it gets used about 85% of the time.

Well update on the lens repair by Nikon. Good customer service on the front end. Got the lens to them in 2 days. They quoted 5 days to fix. $319. They are Still waiting on parts. This seems odd for a popular lens. Anyway the customer service folks will let me know when they get the parts in.

I had a D850 that needed repair two or three years ago. It also took a little longer awaiting parts from Japan. My take is that they are holding key parts at their central depot in order to reduce required inventory and free up more parts to build new products. Could also just be that they recently used the last one in their stock and were already waiting for more.
