You have some options:

Old computer, old software, compatible OS, compatible interface (keep it OFF the Internet if pre-Windows 10)

Computer with modern OS, compatible interface, and Hamrick VueScan or SilverFast software

Copy your slides and negatives with a digital camera* and process through Negative Lab Pro and Lightroom Classic

*See the attachment. It's a PDF.

If I were the OP I choose the first option. I can even get a new computer that can run old OS and has all the interface needed like firewire.
I found for the Minolta Dimage I can half use the second option that is install Vuescan to get the driver but don't use the software. The Minolta software run fine but its driver doesn't work with Window 10.

I'm an Apple guy with the Minolta DiMage 5400 dedicated 35mm scanner. I have scanned over 7,000 35mm slides and film strips with it. At 5400 dpi this scanner produces amazing scans. The old Minolta software to run the scanner with a Mac ended with OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. I have kept an old 24" iMac with Snow Leopard so I can still use the Minolta software. I tried VueScan with later OS's, but the scans were noticeably inferior to the Minolta scans.
Anyway that is my solution to scanning 35mm slides. You can likely find a similar workaround for your Nikon Coolscan unit.

Hello BebuLamar, Do you think that the old Nikon scanner software would run under Windows 7? Just thinking ahead if the previous scanner software mighty like to sell his existing unit. Robert

Thanks for the Nikon info Burk. I operate a windows 7 computer and windows 10 computer for legacy types of software. Also, have an old XP computer somewhere. I would like a Nikon scanner (due to being a Nikon guy) but know that Nikon does not make scanners anymore but would like to buy a used one in good condition and using Nikon software or one of the third party software solutions. Thanks for the 'download' but I have thousands of slides and the camera copying is not a good solution for me. Again, thanks. Robert

I had mine running on Windows 7. But it wouldn't run on 8.

Sorry, new to UHH. I am struggling to attach a photo to this text. I copied about 15,000 slides using this setup. The essentials are a Dx Nikon camera, 40mm f2.8 Macro lens, Nikon slide holder and a speedlight. I could photograph, upload and edit 100 slides in about 75 minutes.

Several years ago I downloaded a patch that allowed the Nikon LS4000ED software to run on Windows 10; unfortunately I don't remember where I found it. In any case I've been using Vuescan for some time and I prefer it; it is constantly updated and will run all three of my film and flat scanners with the same interface. Switch to Vuescan.

This is a link to get scanner to work in Windows 8/10:

Use Vuescan to TIFF then adjust further if needed
Agree that flat beds are easier to use but the detail and density range of dedicated film scanners are better
My Minolta and Canon are both dead.Hope your Nikon comes back to life. On both step motor to move carrier has failed after much use and many years
Now scanning with Vuescan on i900 Microtek huge flat bed that has a tray under glass for negs or slides OK but not same density rangr

Message user CHG-CANON for the procedure to attach images. It’s a several step challenge for new users to learn.

You can try. I think it would run but won't connect to the scanner as the driver isn't compatible under Windows 7. You would have to use a third party driver.

I posted a link to make Nikon 4.0.3 (I think that’s the version as I recall) work under Windows 10 (and 7). I use this myself. I run Windows 10 on my Mac under Parallels and the modified Nikon Scan software works fine, like it used to under XP and on my old Mac. Haven’t tried under Windows 11 yet.
I didn’t wish to buy VueScan.

I spent YEARS keeping my XP machines alive to program Legacy Communications Equipment.
It was an ongoing struggle with the IT department who continued to suggest contacting the manufacturer for an updated driver. Manufacturer had moved on to Windows based systems which they would be GLAD to sell us. Probably about 75 systems muli-thousands each.
XP was a small price to pay...

There are laboratories full of test equipment that ONLY works with XP ...

If your extraordinary scanner is happy with XP, keep it.!

At work? I only have 1 PC that belongs to the IT dept which I used for email and accessing their server. I have a number of other PC's laptop and desktop that don't belong to the IT dept. They run from DOS to Windows XP. They are simply TOOLS and were purchased as tools.
