Why don't cameras have a GPS feature included?

Some do, I own two 5DIV, 7DII and I used to have a 6D that had it.

Nikon D5300, D6, and I think the P610 had it, along with some of the AW types.

Some of the Sony SLT's did as well, A65, A77 mark 1

At this time, with "connected" cameras, I think the manufacturers want you to use your phones GPS.

I think my Canon 6D mkII has it, but it drains the battery - unless you're in and out of the menus all of the time switching on and off options.

GPS is very energy-consuming. If I leave my iPhone navigation on for 3-4 hours the battery is almost drained. I had a Garmin GPS for hiking years ago - the battery only lasted about 10-12 hours, so if you were backpacking for five days in the wilderness you had to just selectively turn it on and off.

I once used an add-on device for my D750 (I think). It received a signal from another device that I carried in my pocket. It worked amazingly well, but since I don't travel very far, and my memory still works, I can do without it. I think GPS would be a handy built-in feature. One problem is that any GPS must first find the satellites, and that can take time. Once it has the signal, it will hold onto it for the day.

Yes! Good point! If it was included in cameras, it would have to be used sparingly.

I use a Micnova on my D850. Minimal battery drain, the unit has a separate on/off switch. Extremely accurate, much better than my phone. Inexpensive too.

My camera links to my phone to pick up the GPS coordinates. I always have my phone with me and a charger if I'm afraid of running out of battery. I also find that it really doesn't have a negative effect on the battery on the phone so it works pretty well. I have had several cameras that had built in GPS, but I found it took them longer to get lock in after turning on and it used more battery.

The Olympus TG series has GPS built in, records the location to the photo and it will record a GPS log that can be synced to the files from other cameras in post.

The excellent Digital Photography Review website was utilized to research which cameras have GPS functionality. From the main page, under the ‘Cameras' tab, the third option listed is ‘Camera feature search'. Using this tool, you can filter by camera type and feature to determine which cameras have the selected feature. This article will focus primarily on interchangeable lens cameras (DSLRs and mirrorless). Of the 366 cameras listed in these categories, only 15 have a built-in GPS feature. That's a paltry 4.1%. The cameras, as well as their MSRP, are listed in the table below.

Camera Model MSRP (body only)
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV $3,499
Canon EOS 6D $1,699
Canon EOS 7D Mark II $1,799
Canon EOS 1DX Mark II $5,999
Hasselblad X1D $8,995
Leica SL $7,450
Nikon 1 AW1 $799.95
Nikon D5300 $599.95
Pentax K-1 $1,800
Pentax K-3 II $1,099
Samsung Galaxy NX $1,599.99
Sony Alpha a99 $2,800
Sony SLT-A55 $750*
Sony SLT-A65 $999*
Sony SLT-A77 $1,399
*includes 18-55mm kit lens

My travel camera is a Sony RX-10 iii. GPS is the only feature I really miss. Will you provide some details as to how you setup your phone to provide location information? I use an Android phone. Thx. TF

Some do but, they drain the battery so I don't use it often.
