I shoot with Sony a77 and a77 II (Crop sensor) bodies. Two of my a-mount lenses for those bodies are for full frame sensors (70-400G f4-5.6 and Minolta 50 f2.8 Macro) I'd like to have a Sony a7 IV full fame for it's ergonomic and focus improvements as well as other usability enhancements. I imagine using the Sony 70-400 and Minolta 50 macro on an a7 IV body via an a mount lens to e mount body adaptor. But--- i'm confused about which adaptor to use. I'd like autofocus and auto exposure to work as though the adaptor and those lenses were native e-mount for Sony. Also-- Several of my A mount crop sensor lenses are said to be usable at the longer end of their focal length range
(Tokina 11-16 f 2.8 and Sigma 17-70 f2.8) My Sigma 30 f 1.4 Art I think is not usable on a full frame body without severe vignetting.

SOOO--- I'm turning to my UHH cohorts for adaptor advice.

PS What is the UHH Sony shooters experience with the Sigma 24-105 f4 G

Check out the sony la-ea5 adapter for your a mount lenses. It should function with all your A mount lenses and the a-7iv af system.
I tried one on my a7r iii and it did not but I believe your newer camera will operate with it. It has two advantages over the la-ea4 that I use, your not stuck with A mount af function and no translucent mirror stealing a third of those precious photons.
Best of luck.

Edit: just to clarify, the la ea4 and it’s translucent mirror performs af on my rig whereas the la ea5 lets the camera and it’s far superior system do this.

Fwiw: I use a fotodiox PRO (all manual) adapter for my two minolta af and two minolta mf macro lenses.
I sold my a-77 to go full frame, man do I regret that! I’m gonna buy another and it’s gonna cost me.

Here's what Ken Rockwell said about the LA-EA5 adapter (rather unkind but brutally accurate):

Some of these old A-mount lenses are good, and others aren't, but none perform as well as Sony's latest dedicated E-mount lenses. This adapter is for old people with a bunch of old lenses of which they they won't let go rather than get with the program and buy all new dedicated E-mount versions.

I have an a77 body that MIGHT become available whether or not I spring for the a7 IV. The proceeds from the sale of the A77 body might help ease the sting of the drain on the bank account for the A7 IV. I would keep my a77II as a supplement to the new a7 IV. I don't really need two nearly identical camera bodies How much would you want to pay for my A77?

Yeah MDI Mainer, Ken Rockwell is right. I'm a penurious old man, I have my old but good quality A mount lenses but am short of $ for e mount replacement lenses. There are other things that are more needed in my life than new lenses to play with.

That's where I started out too, but soon found that using converted A-mount glass was cheating me out of fully enjoying the advanced features that were the reason I bought the new camera in the first place. There are now enough good used E-mount lenses on the market to ease the pain of buying native.

I happen to mimic your inventory a bit.

I happen to still own a Sony A77...A77II and a Sony A7RIV.
I also happen to have the LA-EA5 adapter and the 70-400mm.

The newer lenses can take advantage of everything the A7RIV has to offer...AF tracking...DR...everything...full access to all of the camera's focal points (most important).
It's probably the best adapter out there...by anyone.

The 70-400mm works flawlessly with the adapter...very fast...very accurate.
I have borrowed a 100-400 to compare it with the A-mount version.
There is no difference optically...none. The A-mount does give you a great starting out FL...70mm.
I ended up deciding on the 200-600mm and keeping the 70-400mm a mount.

Anywho...the LA-EA5 is what you want. The 70-400 is a screaming eagle with the adapter.
Do I use it much? Sometimes I take it instead of the 200-600mm (which has faster AF).

I don’t have any experience with Sony cameras but I can recommend the Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art lens highly. I’ve used it for a travel lens for over 5 years on a Nikon D750 and it produces fine images even in fairly low light if you bump up the ISO to about 1600-3200 with only a little degradation, your Sony camera may perform even better. Buy it as a refurb from Sigma USA and you will love it even more. Good luck!

I have the Minolta 50 macro, it does require an adapter with power (the little drive unit/hole) and has the prizm. There is only one Sony adapter for that works that I know of.

I'm working with an A99 and an A7 lll, with both E mount and A mount lenses. I tried the LAEA-5, and I thought it would be an answer to let me use the better autofocus in my A7 lll. But it does not work with most A mount lenses, and I returned it! I own two LAEA-4 adapters. The reason I bought a second one is that there is a product called a "Monster" adapter that you can retro-fit the LAEA-4 to use the auto focus on the camera instead of the mirror. I was looking for someone to do the adapter for me, but I cannot find anyone who will do it. So my recommendation is to stick with the LAEA-4 adapter, because the LAEA-5 only works with a few lenses on a few bodies. I think this "5" adapter is one of Sony's rare mistakes.

I also have the Sigma 24-105, and use it on the A99. I do not think I have tried it on the A7lll, but my Sigma 24-70 F2.8 Art lens stays on the A7lll all the time! I like Sigma lenses a lot, but might try the new Tamron 35-150 f2.8 as it is perfect for event photography. I reviewed the LAEA-5 adapter with the A7iv, and they claim it works with more lenses, so you may give it a try, but be sure you can return it if it does not work. The LAEA-4 is very reliable!

Well, I would stick with the LAEA-4 for the reliability with older lenses....

I have the Sigma 24-105 on an A99 - it is a GREAT lens ! This Sigma MIGHT work better with the 5 adapter ??

The LAEA-5 adapter is not meant for your body...it works...but not fully...not near fully.
Sony 6600...A7RIV...A7RC...A1. They get full functionality.
