Wakodahatchee Wetlands: Purple Gallinule
Feb 4, 2022 07:41:07   #
sb Loc: Florida's East Coast

It was a very productive walk around these beautiful wetlands earlier this week. There is a mile-long boardwalk, and the wildlife is used to people being on the boardwalk, and they ignore us as we gawk and point cameras...

All SOOC with some cropping using a Canon 6D v.1 and a Canon 100-400mm v.1.

Set # 2 if you missed it:

Nice. But a Purple Swamp Hen, not a Gallinule.

Yes - you are correct. I had never heard of this non-native species, which is in the same family as the purple gallinule, that has been introduced into Florida. I was thinking that these "purple gallinule" were larger than ordinarily seen! The swamphen is larger and generally has a red frontal shield, as these do, whereas the gallinule has a white one.

The Florida Ag Extension Service has published a whie paper on distinguishing the two birds:

Very good set Steve. Do you know if the Purple Gallinule is native to the west coast of Florida? I have never seen one.
