People drive different kinds of vehicles because they have different needs.

Some factors that need to be considered are.

1 How tall you are. I have attempted to get in cars that were too small for me.
2. How may people you need to transport on a regular basis.
3. What type of goods you need to transport ( landscaping supplies, Lumber, tools of various sorts, etc. )
4. The climate where you live and the nature of the roads available to you. (heavier vehicles generally do better in snow.)
5. Do you usually drive in the city or rural area.

I have driven across North Dakota with temperatures approaching -50 F (-45C) in a SUV. Try that with your motorcycle even a big Harley. (make sure you wear an air tag so we can find your frozen body.)

Drive what you like and leave others alone.

The main reason so many SUVs and pickups are being purchased is because the auto manufacturers have decided that is what they are going to make. They apparently have seen an increase in those sales and have decided to discontinue making sedans and coupes and sporty cars.

In my married life, almost 50 years, I and my wife have only owned one car that could be considered a sports car, a Toyota Celica GT. We have never owned a pickup and only within the last decade have we owned a SUV (a Chevy Equinox and a Ford Escape). I have always opted for the full size sedan; i.e. Oldsmobile Dynamic 88, Buick LeSabre, Pontiac Bonneville, Dodge Intrepid, Ford Taurus; with a few mid size thrown in, Pontiac Tempest, Dodge Stratus, and a couple compacts like a Yugo GV and a Ford Pinto. With all that variety in makes and models, I found that sensible driving and careful safe driving was much more fuel efficient. Our current cars are the Fords; Taurus (2010) and Escape (2018). Both are getting in the mid 20s mpg average for city/highway travel. I also have a motorcycle (Harley-Davidson full dress touring model that weighs in around 900 pound's and gets very close to 50+ mpg, I can get 250+ miles from one tank of gas, 5.5 gallons.)

All that explanation to say that basically the type of vehicle one drives is personal but also related to what is available from the manufacturers. I bought my Taurus in 2010 and was quite disappointed when I learned that Ford was halting production of the Taurus (except for overseas). I truly like the car for all it does and how it drives and handles. I'll drive it until it can no longer be repaired or maintained. Most vehicles I have owned were kept for as long as possible. I follow the idea of use it up wear it out, make it do or do without.

This 90 yr old bought a RAV4 Hybrid in 2019 and love it. Easy to get in and out of and excellent field of view forward and backward. Gets 38.5 mpg (am now on my 9th fill-up) and have about 1600 miles on it.

I can give you a reason. When driving my mustang, I almost get hit EVERY day. My poor little car-pooler, who is a woman of color, says she is going to turn white with all the near misses. I was actually sitting at a red light when a cement pumping truck came over the line and took me out, head-on. Because my mustang is a manual transmission I could not drive it for a while due to having left knee surgery. So, I started driving my F350 truck. I really like it because it sits high and I can see everything going on. And since starting to drive the truck not one person has tried to run into or over me. It feels safer. Plus we have plenty of bad weather here and the mustang just can't get through high water since it is a special made "Roush" and very low to the ground.

9 fill-ups in 1600 miles? 177 miles between fill-ups? At 38.5mpg it appears the tank only holds 5 gallons.

Many people, esp. those who live in or grew up in rural areas "fill up" whenever the tank gets gets below 2/3 or 1/2. Running out of gas when you live way out in the country is a royal pain in the ...

Abo, in reply to DIGEST THIS:

1st picture is the car I get groceries in... 2nd picture is what I drove to work (in the parking lot space gives you an idea of size)... 3rd picture is when I used the truck on the weeks or weekends. Not saying that truck and trailer are heavy but when I upgraded to those I had to change my route to the campground since I was over the maximum weight for a bridge on that original route.

Cruising down the road in comfort in that truck was so quite and comfortable I rarely heard the sound of little cars crunching under my wheels.

4th picture is one of the camp sites we stayed at (half of year home half of year camping) for several years

A Roush Mustang and an F-350. I am envious!

Nice comment, by the way.

The manufacturers make SUV's because that's what the public want and that's what they buy. Not enough people buy sedans to make it worth while to keep making them. Your statement that the manufactures make the kind of cars they want us to buy is really dumb. It may fit your narrative, but it's not factual.

I think it is time to ask the question what personal vehicle does "old Scratch" own and drive? The theology related to answering this question will exceed in perplexity the answer to the historic question of "how many angles can dance on the head of a pin?"

There is enough brain power within the hedges of us "Hoggers" to answer all of the above.

Zero angles can dance on the head of a pin; an infinite# of angels can however.
