A good friend gave me a Canon 9000F flatbed scanner for me to scan a selection from 5,000 slides and too many shoe boxes full of prints. I was able to get it set up just fine and it scans both prints and slides as advertised. My problem is it only seems to output pdf files and I need/want jpeg files. The fellow who gave me the scanner is sure he was able get jpegs out of the scanner but I have not figured it out yet. My two kids and the four grandkids have not been of help yet so I am seeking some assistance from knowledgeable Hoggers.
Yes, I have checked on Google and most of the recommendations seem to be to subscribe to Adobe for $9.99 a month for an "easy" conversion. This seems like significant overkill. I hope there is a way just to have it output in jpeg format. If not, then I need a convenient way to convert the pdf to jpeg. Any assistance will be sincerely appreciated.

Did he give you the manual?
You probably want to visit the support section of the USA.CANON.COM website (or your local version). The product manual is kind of a local website (hyper-link help file) rather than a PDF. You didn't say if you have the mark I or II, so I don't want to link you to the wrong download. Anyway, there's a section in the download titled 'Let's Try Scanning'. You can clearly save the scan as a JPEG. The process is described with lots of screen captures of the scanner software. You have to search the support section by product. In the Search box, type in Canon 9000F and then pick your product from the result list. Then, select Manuals and initiate the download for your OS. It's an EXE that 'installs' the manual when you run / open the downloaded file.

Paul's (CHG_Canon) reply is spot on. If you haven't already done so, download the (free) scanner's manual from Canon's website. Attached is a screen shot of the page (they aren't numbered, so...) that describes the 'save as' options:
Thank you all for the very quick and effective responses. It now works!! All this without grankids help. Just with very helpful Hoggers. Now all I have to do for the next year or so is to scan and file thousands of slides and prints. No, I am not scanning everything. We have spent much of the pandemic period weeding out our photos and slides. We have reduced the numbers by at least 70%. Of those, many will stay as prints and slides. The "good" ones that we think the next several generations might be interested in will be scanned and stored. Now that I have the system down, I am also sending many to old friends with flash backs to as much as 60 years ago and more.
Again, thank you all very much.

The scanner driver itself should have the option to save PDF, Multi-Page PDF, TIFF, and JPEG. If not, get an Epson scanner.
I can't believe Canon would not give you a simple drop-down option in the driver menu. A simple visit to this link should help:
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/scanners/support-scanners-canoscan-series/canoscan-9000fBeyond that, if your current operating system does not support that scanner, Hamrick VueScan and SilverFast 9 are two popular imaging scanner drivers that work with hundreds of scanners. Mac users can use the Apple Image Capture tool, which supports eight different output formats. It comes free with every Mac.

While you get tired of waiting and waiting on your scanner, you might want to consider this: (It's a PDF download, 20-page white paper on why I sold my scanner).
Many say that the program VueScan is superior to the programs that come with scanners.

There is a "Save As" option in the scanning software that allows you to save as a jpg/Exif, TIFF, BMP, PDF, PDF (multiple pages), or PDF (add pages). It is in the Scan/Import window. The software is a little disorganized so it is very easy to miss that. Ordinarily it will save as PDF as a default. The software is set to Auto as a saving default. Also some file formats are not allowed based on your document type selection -

I concur. Go with the VueScan software.
Instead of using the program that comes with the scanner you might take a look at Vue Scan. I don’t use it but it sounds like a good one. Works on all brands. Has more options than the programs that come with the scanners.

If you cannot find Canon software to output jpegs then look into
VueScan. This supports over 6000 scanners and outputs jpeg, tiff, pdf - you name it.

In the scanning window of my Epson, there is a box to click to change the output. The little icon doesn't indicate what it's for, but I can change the output by clicking on that - bottom, right corner. Look around, and you should find something similar.
