We have the Screen Actors Guild strike to thanks for these types of programs. When they went on strike the networks had to hustle to find a way to broadcast new programs for many viewers don't want to watch re-runs. Some "Brainiac" came up with the idea of having their film crew follow nitwit families hoping that it would be entertaining to watch. What they found was that it was far less expensive than producing scripted programs with large production and actor fees.
This is why we were left with such thrilling entertainment as "Honey Boo Boo". Sad, very sad.
