in the supermarket this morn I went to the butcher section, not the pre packed meat, and asked for steak.2 porterhouse,(EXPENSIVE.!)

The man wrapped them and asked if I had more shopping to do in the shop. I said " only three more items" He said when I had finish I could collect my steaks. OK...

He then walked me to the checkout lass, handed her my meat and told her it was mine. When I questioned this he told me he had to do that. shop rules, as people were stealing the meat...putting the package in their clothing and just paying for a few other items.

how sad is this?

Wow.
Wonder if they'll do that in grocery stores with filet mignon soon.

😪 Unfortunately at least some people have been like that for all of history but today it seems you hear of it more - probably because of the numbers of us now - even a small % = lots of them. And though many will be upset by this: The fading of religion and its morality teaching probably means a few % more of them and they are bolder than in the past.

In college and the first few years I was teaching I worked in a large supermarket and you would be amazed at the things people did and where they hid things they were shop lifting, or maybe not amazed.
Our store manger came in one day after a morning meeting at the district office and saw the police leaving with a shop lifter in cuffs. Went into his office and saw blood on his desk and other places. He freaked out and only calmed down after it was explained that after getting caught and taken to the office and two female clerks came in to search her the shop lifter pulled a package of meat out from inside her skirt and slammed it on the desk causing the package to rupture and splash blood all over.

The boss thought some employees had gotten "too enthusiastic" about apprehending the shop lifter and there were going to be lots of lawyers in his future all filing law suits.

They do the same thing in the matting and framing department at my local Hobby Lobbys. Too many customers are trying to claim they brought the artwork with them to be looked at.

Down our way fat women have nets between their legs and put items as big as turkeys in it and walk out . Its cheaper to let them go than fight it out in court .

Nothing new. I work part-time at Sam's Club but a few years ago when I worked as an assistant manager, I recall a woman was caught stuffing packs of lobster tails down her panty hose. The tails at that time were about 29.00 a pack and I think she had 4 of them. In today's dollars that would come to almost 200.00. People often rip off retailers and you pay for those shortages in higher prices to make up the shortfall in profits.

Not the meat counter, but here in PA, grocery stores can now sell beer and wine. However, the law states there is a maximum amount of either that can be sold as a single purchase. The limitation is one 15 pack of beer or 132 ounces of wine. So if on wishes to but 30 cans of beer it must be transacted as two purchases. Then the purchased alcohol may not be carried into the store while one buys food or other grocery items, it must be taken to your vehicle in the parking lot.

Geez! Here in the US, the cost of ground beef to make chili is turning that dish into a luxury item.

It is very sad!! On the other hand, how would you feel if you earned $10 - 12 an hour and had to buy a week's to food to feed your family? Poverty is not pretty!!
Just looking at the other side, where many others reside.

Sorry Mark, but if you are earning $10-12/hr, porterhouse shouldn't be, um, on the menu.

Shoplifting has become a major industry. Many stores figure that it's cheaper to take the loss than to spend money on security measures. The stores don't lose money; we pay higher prices.
