The Amazon Fire HD10

I had Jerryc41 in mind when I decided to do this post, since he's talked about his problems with the power button on these tablets. I bought an HD10 in October of 2019, used it extensively, choosing to use the magnetic hard case's ability to put the tablet to sleep instead of turning it on & off via the power button. The only unorthodox thing I did with the tablet was (about 3 months after I'd bought it) follow a relatively complex formula posted online (don't remember where now) to add the Google Playstore, specifically in order to install the Google Chrome browser. Everything worked fine until January of 2021, when I closed the case to go have supper, came back a couple of hours later to resume reading the book I'd opened earlier, and found it dead as a hammer. Went through all the recovery procedures by-the-book; nothing. I put in it's original box and put it on a shelf.

Fast-forward to November of 2021: I was making room on the aforementioned shelf and the tablet was on the verge of being trashed; on impulse I took it out of the box. It still looked brand-new and I recall thinking it was a shame to have to dispose of it. Again on impulse, I pressed the power button; held it about 10 or 15 seconds I'd guess, and I'll be darned if it didn't boot up perfectly normal, as if I'd been using it yesterday in stead of 9 months previously. Everything operated just fine, including Google Chrome. It continued to do so, up until today about an hour ago. I'd closed the case and put it to sleep, came back later, opened the case and it was DOA all over again, with the same negative results after trying all the recovery procedures. Go figure...

Take it out of the case. Just to see if it makes a difference.

My wife is on a first name basis with all the Amazon techs. Can't tell you how many Kindle and fire tablets she has (plus Samsung and,) and she used them all. Call the techs at Amazon. If they can't fix it, they will more than likely replace it.

Good suggestion, but it stays dead in or out of the case, as I discovered when I tried it.

As matter of fact, I've got 3 HD10 tablets myself, along with 2 E-readers and a 2013-era Kindle Fire HD7. The tablet in my post is the only one I've ever had a problem with, and I'm doubtful that Amazon would replace something purchased in 2019 (but thanks very much for the suggestion anyway).

Yes, they do seem to be quirky. My 8" is totally dead, but the 10" will turn on if I plug it in, and it eventually goes to sleep. When I unplug it, it will wake up. Yesterday, I put it back into its magnetic case, and that turns the screen off, but it still beeps when it gets some kind of notification. When I open the case, it lights up. I'll keep using it and charging it as long as it keeps working. Still, for the price, the Kindle can't be beat - in my opinion. I have points on a credit card that would get me an 8" for free. : )
