Jan 3, 2005 11AM doing 5 mph in fairly heavy snow. (for Southern California)
Special Olympics used to hold Winter Games in Big Bear NE of the Los Angeles Metro area and our middle son who is special needs trained at the Adaptive Recreation Center and competed in the skiing events so I often made the drive up in winter. Being on the A Track of a year round school I was on break from the week before Christmas to Early February so was able to get him there to ski.
I went back to this image from 2005 because it fits this time of year.
Olympus C3020Z super zoom @ 13mm, 1/320 @ f/2.8, ISO-100
Hand held camera on top of steering wheel while stopped for a few seconds.

An adventure!
I am from Kentucky and lived in Illinois and Pennsylvania so I know a bit about driving in snow.
But some of the Native Southern Californians can provide some free entertainment watching them try it.
Looks like going up the road to ski in Utah, Bob. Drivers sort themselves out regularly (LOL).
Looks like the SUV in front of you really wasn't ready for the snow.

A couple of "Opps!!!" and a spin or sideways slide and most of them slow down and keep spacing. But there are always some who are slow learners and you see tracks going off the road or into a big tree or rock.

A lot of the people who don't live up there or now about snow from living elsewhere don't carry a scraper or keep a broom by the drive way. So the vehicle sits out in the snow over night, looks like a snow bank and they only clean off the lights and windows because their hands get wet and cold doing it by hand. You would be amazed at the number of people you see who don't wear heavy water proof gloves. Those light chilly dry weather gloves don't get it.
Brings back many cold memories, one of which is the I-75 over Jellico Mountain. Thanks for sharing.
Nice capture, Robert...we've had several days this year that "resemble that remark"!!
It never occurred to me that one who lived in southern California might need snow tires. Years ago, I had an ownership interest in video stores not far from Big Bear in Lake Arrowhead and Crestline. That for sure was an adventure--not one I would want to repeat.

Yes, if you live up there or go frequently snow tires make sense in the winter.
Only going up occasionally not so much.
Most of the time during those years I drove a 4WD or AWD SUV with all terrain tires and a set of chains with me. Along the main roads up to Big Bear etc. at different altitude points, they have turn outs and depending on how far down the snow level came they would put up signs listing the types of vehicles, tires etc. allowed beyond that point. Only a few times during those years did I have to stop and put the chains on 4WD/AWD + all terrain tires usually were allowed all the way up. For those who needed help installing chains the local tow truck guys sometimes had a truck with several guys at those turn outs and for a fee they would install your chains and if you were really clueless and had no chains- they had a supply of different sizes in their truck to sell to you.

I helped train special Olympic skaters a while back. it is an amazing feeling to see how happy and how into it they can be. Fortunately I didnt have to go up any mountains in the snow.
Now you're talking.........no thanks !
